I’m Samantha Jane, a Middle Grade mystery writer. I’ve known I wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. When I got my first allowance at age four, I spent it on a book on writing. In kindergarten, I thought I had magical bookshelves as new books kept appearing out of the blue. In second grade, I was one of only two students from my grade selected to attend a young writer’s convention. The experience convinced me that I was definitely meant to be a writer.

However, it wasn’t until recently that I thought about writing mysteries. It’s funny, really. All my life I’ve heard that you should “write what you know” or what interests you. And all my life, my favorite books have been mysteries. Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, The Cat Who, Mandie, The Baby-Sitter’s Club, and many others were constantly in my library pile. But for some reason, it just never really occured to me that I should just write mysteries. I kept trying to come up with other ideas, that would eventually have a mystery spin-off series (in my dreams!) much like The BSC series did. It wasn’t until my best friend said, “Why don’t you just write a mystery?”, that I realized that’s truly what I wanted to do.

Now if only I could get paid… ;)
